Chemistry - Original Contemporary Abstract Art Australia

Delon Govender, Chemistry, 2019. Mixed media collage with acrylic and 24 karat gold on canvas, 640mm(h) x 1520mm(w).

This original contemporary, mixed media abstract collage with 24 karat gold depicts the power we hold to carve our paths in life and the need to stay in touch with ourselves and the world in which we live in. In these trying modern times, it is all too easy to be ensnared in the fast-paced chase of success, work, and the "ideal" lifestyle; we become both disconnected and disorientated with our health and life itself. The need for holistic health, spiritual healing and inner realisation are as necessary today as it was for peoples in antiquity. This modern piece has a stunning marble effect and is a refreshing adornment to any space or room, a crisp and eloquent statement that any viewer can resonate with in multitudinous ways. This recycled original eco-art on canvas was created by local Perth-based, West Australian Artist, Delon Govender.

The Artist woke up one morning only to discover he could not see through his right eye.

He was half blind.

“Do you have a hobby?” asked the eye specialist.

The Artist had a hobby - the fine arts. But the demanding pressures of life made him put this passion on the back-burner. Work consumed his mind, body and soul - sometimes for days on end with no rest, no sleep. Food on the go. Sitting for many hours. Becoming absorbed by the computer. He was extremely skilled at what he did, but on the same token, there was no balance.

“You must change your lifestyle. Go paint, draw. Get away from the computer. Take a break.”

The realisation that he might never recover from this - that he might lose his vision completely - it ate away at his spirit.

When the rolling fog slowly began to recede, he noticed a box of jigsaw pieces spilling its innards onto the mahogany table. He must’ve bought it at some point in the haze. When, he didn’t know. But it was clear it would not be used.

So for the first time in over a decade, the Artist stopped working.

At first, the amount of pressure being released was akin to water bursting and snapping through metal pipes in strong jets. It was the emotion for things he’d forgotten over the past decades. Bad tidings and loss and complacency for a life he had never envisioned he would be in.

So the Artist took the flimsy box of puzzle pieces and reimagined its use.

He painted. Spray painted. Used brushes. Splashed. Dripped. Drew with a steady hand. Collated the pieces and used the finest horse hairs to coat each miniature wooden piece with shimmering molten gold in thick glowing layers.

The Artist stepped back, paint stroked on his wrists, to view see the creature he had created for the first time.

It was two hands, two halves of a puzzle reaching out to brush the tips of their fingers and finally touch. For the first time in over a decade.

The God that resided within every human being was finally rising from underneath layers of thick ash and was reaching the other half. A healing holistic touch, a spark, a catalyst. It enabled a chemical reaction to take place where it had never before. It was Chemistry of the spirit.

The Artist remembered where he lived, the beautiful forests, red dust, sprawling bushland and the glittering jewel oceans of Australia. He left the studio, camera in hand. Explored and traversed. Followed hawks and wild eagles as they flew in the great winds that carved the Earth. He began to heal.

And when he opened his eyes, the Artist could see again, with new vision.
